“How Common Are Complex Health Conditions? You’re Not Rare—You’re Just Unrecognised.”
🌿 Introduction
When you live with multiple chronic or invisible health conditions, it can feel like you’re the only one navigating this kind of complexity. Especially when the world expects you to “keep up,” “stay positive,” or “just push through.”
But here’s the truth: you are not alone.
And you are not rare.
You’re just ahead of the conversation.
This post breaks down the real statistics around complex health—and shines a light on the millions of us managing more than one condition, day after day, often without the visibility or support we deserve.
📊 The Reality Behind the Numbers
🔸 50% of adults live with 1 or more long-term conditions
That’s half the population. From anxiety and IBS to autoimmune disorders and fatigue syndromes—chronic conditions are everywhere. We’re just not always talking about them.
🔸 25% live with 2 or more conditions (called multimorbidity)
Multimorbidity is no longer rare or only associated with age. It affects young adults, women, and neurodivergent communities at increasingly high rates—and it changes everything from how we work to how we rest.
🔸 8% live with 5+ long-term conditions
Managing five or more conditions often requires constant self-advocacy, medication management, and navigating a health system that treats you like a checklist instead of a person.
🔸 Up to 2% of people live with 10+ chronic conditions
These are the people frequently called “complex cases.” Many fall through gaps in care—because most systems weren’t built to treat layers. They were built for single-issue, single-treatment models.
🔸 And yes—some of us live with 15+ conditions
You might not hear about us in the data. But we exist. And we’re often quietly surviving while holding down jobs, raising families, or—in my case—trying to build a business and advocate for change.
💛 Why This Matters
Complex health is rarely visible—but it deeply impacts:
- Mental health & burnout
- Employment & financial independence
- Access to care & accommodations
- Our ability to dream, plan, and connect
And yet, so many of us feel ashamed to speak up—because we don’t “look sick,” or our list of symptoms feels “too much.”
That’s why I started this series.
📣 My Story
I live with over 15 long-term conditions, including FND, ADHD, fatigue, and hormonal and neurological symptoms. It’s not linear. It’s not always manageable. And it’s definitely not “rare.”
But I believe that sharing our stories can shift how the world sees us—and how we see ourselves.
If you’re carrying the weight of multiple diagnoses, this blog (and this brand) is for you. You don’t need to explain or justify your experience. Just being here is enough.
